FIREWORKS is a live action short film telling the story of a group of UK-based MI6 officers overseeing a security mission in Libya from a “Spec Ops” control room in London. As the Ops Room security monitors fill with scrolling information and drone camera views we begin to see that the last thing on the minds of the MI6 team is the safety of the Libyan civilians caught in the line of fire. Instead, the everyday concerns of meal breaks, online shopping, and professional ambition take pride of place, with the civilians being reduced to the status of characters in a videogame. As the mission heads towards a fateful conclusion we learn what really matters to the Ops Room team.

Director Paul Franklin will take us through the development, design, and production of FIREWORKS, showing how a purpose-built LED volume and realtime 3D graphics were used to create the film’s compelling visual world.

Paul Franklin is a multi-award-winning filmmaker and visual effects artist with over 30 years of experience. In 1998 Paul co-founded DNEG, now one of the world’s biggest VFX studios with credits on hundreds of films. Paul’s VFX work can be seen in films including HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY, INCEPTION, and INTERSTELLAR. He has won two Oscars® and two BAFTAs for VFX. Paul made his directorial debut in 2017 with THE ESCAPE. FIREWORKS, which premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, is his followup.
