TECH TALKS 2016 | DAY 1 | Rendering | Wednesday 31st August


Welcome to Day 1 of TECHTALKS 2016

London ACM SIGGRAPH is organising the second annual TECHTALKS in association with Double Negative, sponsored by Autodesk. This is a two-day conference designed as a post-SIGGRAPH 2016 Conference recap for London.

The talks will take place at the “Princess Anne Theatre” at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly, while The “David-Lean Room” will be hosting recruitment and exhibitor booths.

 

Seats will be unreserved, operating on a first come first serve basis. Feel free to alternate between attending talks and exploring the show floor.


The talks will also be live streamed to the Recruitment & Exhibitor Room so don’t worry, if you don’t get a seat in the theatre.

    Tom Smith | Creative Director | FX Digital

    WebGL: Real time 3D in the browser

    WebGL allows for browsers to take full advantage of the GPU and can be used for real-time rendering of interactive 3D graphics within the browser. This talk introduces the JavaScript API WebGL and presents a snap shot of whats currently possible with it. It will also share the frameworks used to help developers to work with the API, along with whats in store for the future. A number of examples will be shared, including some of the demos produced by the FX team.

    GPU Rendering

    Blue Zoo use GPU rendering at the core of all of their TV production and commercial animation work. This talk covers the studio's experience of what has worked, and what hasn't, when moving away from CPU rendering.

    Lee Danskin | CTO | Escape Technology

    Cloud based infrastructure

    Lee has been CTO of Escape Technology for the past three and half years, having been in the post production industry for the past 25 years as a client, artist, manufacturer and now re-seller. He taught at Escape Studios and is known for being on the development team for Maya 1.0.

    In this talk Lee Danskin will discuss the technologies of today and the future, how they will impact the way we work with hybrid infrastructures, and the potential of the "Born in the Cloud" generation of companies.

    Challenges and Considerations for Adopting the Cloud

    A big decision with many questions along the way. Join us for an open discussion on how industry standard tools and practices are evolving to help studios meet today’s and tomorrow’s cloud adoption challenges. Explore how open-source frameworks are powering this change and are driving our future towards distributed cloud computing.

    Blue-noise Dithered Sampling

    A method that improves the visual fidelity of Monte Carlo renderings without increasing the sampling effort. By correlating the samples between pixels using specially constructed blue-noise matrices, the method minimizes the low-frequency content in the distribution of the approximation error in the output image, thereby reducing its perceptual error.

    The Effects of The Jungle Book

    "The Jungle Book" was a unique project for MPC, and its rich environments and detailed characters presented various challenges for the FX department, which was required to create physically believable simulations that would blend seamlessly with their surroundings while interfacing with large data sets and meeting the production schedule.

    Sol Rogers founded REWIND, an immersive content agency, in 2011 after growing demands for his professional work pulled him away from 15 years as a University Senior Lecturer in Digital Animation, Visual Effects & Emerging Technology.

    Sol has grown REWIND into an award winning tribe of vibrant creative technologists and digital artists. The team is focused on harnessing immersive technologies to deliver groundbreaking VR, AR, Animation, DOOH, VFX and 360 degree video projects for some of the world's largest companies and brands including the BBC, NBC, Nike, Sony, Red Bull, Rolls-Royce and Björk.

    Awarded by the UK government the inaugural 'Immersive Reality and Innovation' award in 2015 by Lord Marlon, and named as 'BIMA 100' most influential in 2016; Sol’s knowledge of VR production combined with his evangelical enthusiasm for this new industry has seen him invited to speak at conferences the world over, interviewed for TV and write for magazines and newspapers.

    A Flexible Rigging Framework for VFX and Feature Animation

    Migrating Double Negative's production-proven rigging platform over to a flexible, DCC-agnostic framework results in better rig performance and shorter turnaround times, ensuring that the demands of both VFX and animated features can be met. Submission paper co-authored with Double Negative’s Theo Facey (Global Creature Supervisor) and Sylvain Brugnot (Research & Development Lead).

    Zootropolis: Technology & Effects

    The modern mammal metropolis of Zootropolis is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together – a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. Rajesh Sharma, Manager Look/Effects/Dynamics and Cesar Velazquez, Head of Effects, will share a behind-the-scenes look at how technology and effects supported the characters and worlds of Zootropolis including flesh, flab and fascia simulation, art directable procedural vegetation and ice cream, crowds and fur.
