About the Talk

Don't miss the chance to see this exclusive screening of the short film Ray Tracing FTW before it is shared with the world! Visualization company Chaos presents a Martini Giant production of this Western-themed comedic short.

Join producer Chris Nichols (host of the CG Garage podcast), executive producer Vlado Koylazov (creator of the Academy Award winning renderer Chaos V-Ray), and director of photography Richard Crudo (six-term past President of the American Society of Cinematographers). It showcases the ‘acting’ skills of many notable VFX legends including the production designer for Avatar, VFX supervisor on John Wick 3, the co-founder of Digital Domain and many more!

The panel will take you behind the scenes and explain how they used the short to help battle test Project Arena, the new fully ray traced virtual production technology developed at the Chaos Innovation Lab.

General Admission tickets will have either an evening or afternoon session, and you are only allowed entry during the time specified on your ticket. You can book a ticket for the evening session and a ticket for the afternoon session, so ensure you check the schedule to select the correct ones.

Speakers:

Chris Nichols

Director of Special Projects, Chaos Innovation Lab

CG industry veteran Chris Nichols holds a Bachelor’s degree from Colgate University majoring in Mathematics, Art and Art History, and a Masters in Architecture from Rice University. His deep understanding of both art and science has taken him on a wide and varied career path.

He was hired by Gensler - the largest architecture firm in the world - to focus its CG visualization. He later applied his knowledge to a long career in visual effects which included work on movies such as Maleficent, Oblivion, and Tron: Legacy. In his current role with Chaos, Chris finds interesting ways to bridge gaps between technical and creative CG problems and is currently focusing on virtual production. He also serves as host of the popular CG Garage podcast.

Vlado Koylazov

Head of Innovation, Chaos

Vladimir “Vlado” Koylazov is a co-founder of visualization company Chaos and is the co-creator of the globally acclaimed rendering software V-Ray - honored with Emmy® and Academy Awards® for its role in the widespread adoption of ray-traced rendering for motion pictures and television.

In his previous role as Chief Technical Officer, Vlado has been the driving force behind the software development, R&D and innovations at Chaos for more than 20 years, while being an active member of the global CG community. Vlado now leads the company's recently established Innovation Lab which researches ways to perfect technologies in the field of ray tracing and 3D visualization.

Richard Crudo

Cinematographer

Richard Crudo, ASC is a cinematographer and director with a long-standing and celebrated career in the film industry. Since the 1990s, he has lensed more than thirty features including the timeless classic, "American Pie". Born and raised in New York and currently based in Los Angeles, Richard has served six terms as president of the American Society of Cinematographers and three years as a Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

He is also a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and in 2007 was made a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. He is a frequent lecturer at universities and is a regular contributor to American Cinematographer magazine and other industry publications. He is also a leading proponent of the drive to establish standards for digital imaging workflow.

Albena Ivanova

Commercial Director, Chaos

In her current role of Sales Director, Albena Ivanova focuses on media and entertainment and strategic products at Chaos. She is passionate about production techniques, machine learning, and technical advancements in filmmaking, and has forged relationships with many VFX professionals and companies throughout the world. Albena benefits from experience from prior roles at Chaos dedicated to researching and implementing best practices for technological improvements in education. Before joining the Chaos family, Albena worked as a regional manager in the IT industry. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Global Business at the University of Oxford.
