About the Talk
From character design to groom and performance challenges, hear from the DNEG Animation team who helped bring Jim Davis' beloved comic strip icon to life on the big screen. Join Producer Shelley Smith, Groom Supervisor Kristin Farrensteiner and VFX Supervisor Freddy Chaleur as they walk through the creative process of pulling the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat, out of the comic strip and into an animated feature film. Directed by Mark Dindal, The Garfield Movie was animated and produced by DNEG Animation with Alcon Entertainment.

Members can access all DAY 2 conference sessions with their member ticket. General Admission tickets will have either an evening or afternoon session, and you are only allowed entry during the time specified on your ticket. You can book a ticket for the evening session and a ticket for the afternoon session, so ensure you check the schedule to select the correct ones.
All tickets are FREE. Please be aware that entry to the Screening room is on a first-come, first-served basis as there is limited capacity. Members have priority entry to the Screening room.

Kristin Farrenstein
Groom Supervisor, DNEG Animation
Kristin Farrensteiner is a Groom Supervisor at DNEG Animation, boasting over a decade of dedicated involvement in the CG entertainment sector. Renowned for pioneering the development and simulation of digital hair, fur & feathers, Kristin has left an indelible mark on major productions such as Nimona, Avengers: Endgame and The Garfield Movie. Kristin's career journey began as a generalist, evolving into pivotal roles at DNEG and ILM. Returning to DNEG in 2022 as Lead Groom TD and later, Groom Supervisor for DNEG Animation, Kristin also actively mentors aspiring talents and contributes to advanced workshops in the field.
Freddy Chaleur
VFX Supervisor, DNEG Animation
Freddy Chaleur, a seasoned VFX supervisor at DNEG Animation, possesses a 24-year career in animation, contributing to major projects for Disney, Sony, and Paramount. His passion ignited at the age of nine when he acquired his first computer, self-teaching programming for image creation. Armed with a background in math, computer graphics and art, Freddy began his journey as a lighting/compositing artist. From video games, TV series to feature films, he has worked internationally, from France and North America to his current base in London, showcasing his versatile expertise and unwavering love for the craft.
Shelley Smith
Producer
Shelley started in Feature Animation in 2010 as an intern at Pixar Animation Studios. Over the last decade, she has worked on six feature films, including Coco, Toy Story 4, Jungle Book and Ron’s Gone Wrong, as well as, numerous shorts and television specials. She has also worked in clearances and development, utilizing her law degree from the University of Florida. Mr. Spam Gets a New Hat is her first Producer role.
